Structural Steel Detailing
Structural Steel Detailing is the production of detailed drawings for steel fabricators and steel erectors to use in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures.
Steel detailers prepare detailed plans, drawings and other documents for the manufacture and erection of steel columns, beams, braces, trusses, girders and miscellaneous steel like stairs and handrails. Steel detailing is a critical communication connection that unites key experts such as engineers, architects, contractors, fabricators, and others who are involved in the project at any level.
THE IMPORTANCE OF STEEL DETAILING
Structural steel detailing is an important, mandatory process in all types of manufacturing and construction activities, such as erection of residential and commercial buildings, factories, and institutes, as well as shipbuilding. This is a critical process of structural engineering and demands near-99% accuracy. Even a tiny error can lead to a loss of valuable time and money.
Structural steel detailing necessitates the development of comprehensive drawings for fabricators and contractors, as well as plans, estimates, and other necessary reports and activities. There are two sorts of drawings used in this process: shop drawings and erection drawings.
Shop drawings: Each steel element, such as joists, beams, columns, and braces, are meticulously detailed in the shop drawings. This describes how steel fabricators should make each component. Component dimensions and sizes, bolting, welding, material specifications, and other details required for each component’s fabrication are all  included in the shop drawings.
Erection drawings: The erection drawings specify the geographic placement of each steel component within the structure and detail the dimensioned plans. These drawings detail the position of each component, the installation requirements, and any other field work involved with the project, such as the installation of welding spots, wedge anchors, and bolts.
Steel detailing services also include other important stages such as reinforcing steel detailing, anchor setting plans, steel design, connectivity diagrams, shop bolt summary and BoM (Bill of Materials).
Steel detailing standards
The detailer is required to comply with the steel detailing standards of different countries, such as those specified by the:
- American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
- American Welding Society (AWS)
- National Institute of Steel Detailing (NISD)
- Canadian Institute of Steel Construction
- Australian Institute of Steel Construction
- Euro Codes and British Standard Codes
The design, strength and integrity of steel structures are the responsibility of the structural engineer, while complying with the major dimensions and building codes are the responsibility of the architect. The detailer is responsible for getting the steel detailing drawings approved by the structural engineer and the architect prior to release for fabrication.
